What to Expect at the April Community Café
We are excited to be joined by Jhody Polk, Founder of the Legal Empowerment & Advocacy Hub (LEAH) and the Jailhouse Lawyers Initiative (JLI) at the Bernstein Institute for Human Rights at NYU School of Law.
In this session, Jhody will share her journey as a jailhouse lawyer and explore how jailhouse lawyering fits within the broader community justice worker movement. Drawing from years of experience, Jhody will reflect on the impact of legal empowerment, storytelling, and relationships in advancing justice.
Together, we’ll explore how justice-impacted advocates and community justice workers are building bridges between people inside institutions and the movements working for change on the outside. Jhody will share stories from the field, reflect on the values and identities that shape this work, and invite participants to think about how relational justice—building right relationships with one another—can strengthen the movement.
Come ready to listen, share, and build community.
